Upgrade your knowledge and skills with our professional workshop series! Higher Ed Strategies, LLC in collaboration with Miller/Cook & Associates, Inc. is pleased to offer the following 2008 Professional Workshop Series. These one-day workshops offer professional level training opportunities for individuals holding positions in admissions, financial aid, business offices and student services. Professionals with extensive experience in financial aid, admissions and fiscal affairs teach workshops.

The cost of registration covers lunch and a participant binder with valuable reference information to take back to the office. Payment may be by credit card, purchase order or check. Workshops will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn, Windsor, Connecticut. Registration begins at 8:15 am and the workshop will run from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm.
 
 
 

 
Introduction to Financial Aid for Admissions Staff

This one-day workshop is designed to introduce the college financial aid system to individuals who are new to the admissions office. While this session is designed with the admissions staff in mind, individuals with little or no experience in financial aid from other departments will also benefit from the topics covered. An overview of the federal application process, basic terminology and the different types of financial aid will be covered. In addition, strategies for discussing financial aid issues with prospective students and parents in collaboration with financial aid to maximize enrollment outcomes will be addressed.

The Federal Verification Process & Understanding
Federal Tax Returns & W-2 Statements

This one-day workshop is intended for the financial aid professional with little to moderate experience. The regulatory requirements of the federal verification process will be reviewed and participants will learn how to analyze federal tax returns and W-2 Statements when verifying applications. This is a great introduction for those who are new to financial aid or a great refresher for those with experience. Hot topics and strategies for handling situations that are more complicated will be addressed.

Getting Ready for Your Federal Compliance & A-133 Audits

Come learn how to prepare for an audit from a CPA who is an auditor. This workshop is designed for financial aid and business office staff charged with working with auditors on Federal Student Financial Aid and/or A-133 compliance audits. Learn what the current regulatory “hot buttons” are in addition to what to you can expect when the auditor steps foot on your campus. Establishing effective quality and internal controls will be covered.

Financial Aid 101 for New Financial Aid Staff

This one-day workshop is designed to introduce the federal financial aid system to individuals who are new to financial aid. The workshop is designed to help participants become acquainted with the basic principles of financial aid without becoming overwhelmed.

Fiscal Officer Training for New Business Officers

This one-day workshop is aimed at the new fiscal officer with little or no higher education or financial aid experience. Participants will receive an overview of the federal financial aid system and the fiscal officers responsibilities related to that system. Accounting policies and procedures, reconciling funds, drawing down funds and cash management principles will be covered.
